Indole-3-carbinol belongs to the group of so-called secondary plant compounds and is produced by many plants of the cruciferous family. These include, for example, cabbage varieties such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi and kale. Indole-3-carbinol is a degradation product – a so-called metabolite – of the substance glucobrassicin and is itself converted into other substances in the human body, including 3,3-diindolylmethane (DIM for short).
