Beta carotene

Beta-carotene from natural source

Sanutrition Beta-Carotene contains a high dose combination of natural beta-carotene from Dunaliella salina algae and carrot extract. Beta-carotene not only gives carrots their vibrant orange color, it can also be converted by our bodies to vitamin A, which is important for vision, skin and immune system.

Beta-carotene – the protective shield for the summer

Beta-carotene is a secondary plant substance and is found in all plants that are exposed to light to protect them from photo-oxidative processes. Converted into vitamin A, it protects the skin from sunlight and thus helps to preserve it. Especially from early summer and before skiing vacations, an additional intake is suitable due to the increased UV radiation. The intake of beta-carotene increases its content in the skin and leads to a brown-orange tint.

Additional information

Beta-carotene
Synonym(s): Dunaliella salina

Occurrence in food
Beta-carotene belongs to the group of carotenoids. Beta-carotene is an orange-red secondary plant pigment. Particularly rich in beta-carotene are carrots and pumpkin, yellow to orange fruits such as persimmons, apricots, papayas, mangoes, nectarines, peaches, pears, sea buckthorn or dark green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, endive, chicory, cress, red beet leaves or dandelion.

Physiological effects
Provitamin A : Beta-carotene is an important fat-soluble precursor for vitamin A and is reduced to retinol in the intestinal mucosa.
Antioxidant : Oxygen radical scavenger
Inhibition of lipid peroxidation
Antioxidant light protection
Immune defense : increase in NK cell activity.
Proliferation of B and T cells

EFSA Health Claims
Contributes to normal functioning of the immune system
Contributes to the maintenance of normal mucous membranes
Contributes to the maintenance of normal vision
Helps maintain normal skin

Carotenoids and their physiological functions
As powerful antioxidants, carotenoids can bind free peroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen, and prevent lipid peroxidation by UVB, X-ray and cosmic radiation. The different forms of carotenoids have different starting points, but their functions can complement and reinforce each other. Among the most important carotenoids is beta-carotene, which acts as a bioactive precursor for vitamin A. Thus, it is indirectly but nevertheless significantly involved in embryonic development, visual function, and endothelial cell differentiation. Beta-carotene itself is increasingly stored in the skin and in the cells of the retina, where it can act directly as an antioxidant against UV-induced free radicals.

Photoprotection by carotenoids
Photooxidative processes play an essential role in the development of skin lesions and skin damage. Increased UV exposure occurs not only during the summer and vacation season, but can also exist even during short stays outdoors, where topical sun protection (sunscreen) is usually not used. Carotenoids, especially beta-carotene, are used for long-term prophylaxis against light damage. The intake of 15-30 mg beta-carotene per day over a period of ten weeks leads to a reduced expression of UV-induced erythema (1). Another study also shows that increased intake of 30 mg/day of beta-carotene significantly protects against skin aging (2). However, additional topical measures are essential to ensure complete protection during heavy sun exposure.

General revenue mode
Beta-carotene should be taken with or after meals.
